The short version
A cheap lead is not automatically a good lead. If Meta is optimizing toward form submissions while your business actually needs qualified appointments or purchases, the platform can appear successful while the business sees little revenue.
1. Check what Meta is actually being rewarded for
Map the funnel: impression → click → lead → contacted → qualified → booked → paid. Find the first stage where conversion collapses. If Meta only receives the lead event, it has no direct signal telling it which leads become customers.
2. Measure speed-to-lead
For high-intent services, a lead that waits hours for a response is a different asset from a lead contacted quickly. Track median response time and the percentage of leads receiving the first follow-up within your operating target.
3. Compare the ad promise with the sales conversation
If the creative promises one outcome but the landing page, price, geography, eligibility rules or sales call introduces a different reality, lead volume can remain high while close rate falls.
4. Add qualification without destroying conversion
Ask only questions that change what your team does next: location, service needed, budget/price fit, timing, age or eligibility when relevant. Avoid turning the form into an interrogation.
5. Send better outcome data back into your decision system
Your reporting should separate raw leads from qualified leads, appointments and revenue. That lets you judge campaigns by business outcomes instead of CPL alone.
Diagnostic scorecard
- Cost per raw lead
- Cost per qualified lead
- Contact rate
- Appointment rate
- Show rate
- Close rate
- Customer acquisition cost
- Revenue by campaign/ad
What to test first
Before replacing the entire campaign, test one downstream constraint at a time: faster follow-up, a stronger qualification step, clearer pricing/offer language, or better conversion tracking.
