Don't diagnose quality from CPL alone
A campaign with a $12 lead and a 2% close rate can be worse than a campaign with a $40 lead and a 20% close rate. The useful metric is the cost of reaching the next meaningful business outcome.
Common causes
The conversion is too easy
If the optimization goal rewards a lightweight form completion, the system can find people likely to complete forms—not necessarily people likely to buy.
The creative attracts attention without purchase intent
Broad hooks can increase volume while weakening fit. State who the service is for, what problem it solves and any major eligibility constraint that prospects need to know.
Qualification happens too late
Capture the minimum information required to route, score or reject a lead before a salesperson spends time on it.
Follow-up is inconsistent
Create a defined first-response sequence across SMS, email and phone where appropriate, with clear ownership and stop rules.
Build a lead-quality feedback loop
Tag every lead with a small set of outcomes: unreachable, unqualified, qualified, booked, won, lost. Review those outcomes by campaign and creative every week. That gives the marketing team evidence about what the ads are truly producing.
