You can't improve what you don't measure
Most businesses check AI visibility by asking ChatGPT one question once and reacting to the answer. That tells you very little. AI answers vary from one session to the next and from one assistant to another. A simple, repeatable tracking routine gives you a real picture.
Step 1: Write a fixed question set
List 20 to 30 questions a real buyer would ask before hiring a business like yours. Mix three types:
- Problem questions: "Why are my Facebook leads so low quality?"
- Category questions: "Who are the best marketing consultants for small service businesses in Boston?"
- Comparison questions: "Should I hire an agency or a consultant for Meta ads?"
Keep the wording identical every month so results are comparable.
Step 2: Ask the same questions across several assistants
Run the set in the assistants your buyers actually use, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. Use a fresh session for each run, and turn on web search where the assistant offers it, since that is how many buyers use them.
Step 3: Record four things per answer
- Mentioned: Was your business named? Yes or no.
- Position: Were you the first recommendation, one of several, or a passing mention?
- Cited pages: Which of your pages, if any, were linked as sources?
- Competitors: Which other businesses appeared?
A spreadsheet with one row per question per assistant is enough.
Step 4: Read the pattern, not the single answer
After two or three months, look for patterns:
- Questions where competitors appear every time and you never do show you where to publish next.
- Pages that get cited repeatedly are your strongest assets. Keep them current.
- Competitors that keep appearing usually have something you lack, such as clearer service pages, more reviews or mentions on trusted sites.
Step 5: Tie changes to dates
Log when you publish a new page, fix a technical issue or earn a notable mention. Over time you can see which actions moved your visibility.
A note on expectations
AI visibility changes gradually and no one can guarantee a specific recommendation. A consistent routine turns a vague worry into a list of concrete next steps. If your business is not showing up at all, start with why your business may not be appearing in ChatGPT.
